Funky Kalakar is a sustainable fashion company that works towards improving the future of fashion, by making a collection of vegan shoes and bags (PETA-approved). They strive to become circular because they believe that circular fashion is the way out of the current chaos. The brand uses a combination of natural and upcycled/recycled materials. The materials come from different places in India and the production takes place in Mumbai. The sole of the shoes is made from discarded car tires saved from the landfill. To date, they have upcycled over 1400 kg tires! The bags are made of a material that can be recycled up to 8 times. The packaging is 100% plastic-free (including the tape) and 100% biodegradable. Funky Kalakar deliberately does not donate to charities, because they believe that you only really empower people when you work with them instead of having them be dependent on donations. The brand does look at the needs of its craftsmen.
During the Covid-19 crisis in April, 100% of the proceeds go directly to the craftsmen. Funky Kalakar has also launched the 'Go Zero' initiative, a circular fashion initiative where the brand takes back used shoes and bags to give them a second life and save them from the landfill. Check their website for more information! Funky Kalakar believes in creating a complete sustainable experience, from design to shipping, with the following core values: circularity, veganism, empowerment and transparency.
