Indian Soapnuts contain 100% natural saponins (vegetable glycoside).
These substances form a soapy solution in water with unsurpassed washing power.
The waxnut tree comes from the Himalayan region near northern India and Nepal.
The skin of the wax nut (Sapindus Mukorossi) has been used by locals for centuries as a detergent for washing cotton, wool, and silk.

What are Soapnuts?

Soapnuts are nuts that grow on the soapnut tree (Sapindus).
They are also called ‘soap nuts’, because these magical nuts contain ‘saponins’.
When you combine the peels of the nuts with water, it creates a soapy foam that can be used as a natural detergent.
Indian Soapnuts contain 100% natural saponins (vegetable glycoside).
These substances form a soapy solution in water with unsurpassed washing power.
Now, of course, the Sapindus, which is native to northern India and Nepal, does not need to wash itself.
Instead, the tree uses the saponin to protect itself from natural predators.
The Indian people have known about the cleansing properties of the soapnuts for centuries and have long used the peels to wash cotton, wool and silk clothing.
But it’s also a fantastic all-purpose cleaner and delicious shampoo.

AdvantagesPurging

The soapnuts have a cleansing effect on textiles, domestic surfaces, but also on the hair and body.
A shampoo that doesn’t sting the eyes: ideal!
With its cleansing power, the soapnut also cleans and refreshes your white and colored laundry.

Biodegradable

The soapnuts can be used several times in the washing machine, about 2 to 3 times.
Then you put them in the compost, because they are completely biodegradable.
Ideal for your conscious lifestyle or zero waste household.

What can you use it for?

There are several ways to prepare soapnuts for use.
We mention the ways below, but of course we would love to hear from you if you have any more tips for us!

In the washing machine

Put about 5 soapnuts in a laundry bag and place it in the washing drum.
This bag replaces your normal detergent and fabric softener.
Or pour some of the liquid you make with the recipe below into an eco-friendly cup and place in the washing machine.

All-purpose cleaner/Shampoo/Liquid detergent

Place the soapnuts in a blender and add water.
About 100 to 150 grams of nuts per 1 liter of water.
Mix until you see that the water starts to turn a brown color and you see some foam.
Strain over a glass bottle, so that you are left with a smooth liquid: your homemade cleaner.
Use as a shampoo, shower gel, liquid detergent or all-purpose cleaner.
It will last for about two weeks in the refrigerator, but you can also freeze it.

In the garden

Do you have used soapnuts left over?
Sprinkle these between your plants in the garden.
It repels slugs and other natural enemies.

What is so special about Soapnuts?

Something to clean? You don’t need more than the multifunctional soapnut. The soapy substance that is released when using soapnuts is cleansing and nourishing. The saponins of soapnuts are mild and therefore also suitable for the skin. A wonderful product for your zero waste lifestyle, because after use you can scatter the nuts in the garden to protect your plants from unwanted enemies. The circle is complete!
